Support Linguistics

Thank you for your interest in supporting Linguistics! We are a vibrant, internationally-recognized department dedicated to outstanding teaching and mentoring, cutting-edge research, and the development of society’s understanding of the role language plays in our lives.

Like other programs at UC, we face the challenge of decreased funding from the State of California. With our outstanding faculty, staff, and students, we are sure to maintain the excellence our programs are known for. But your support can make the difference in helping us to achieve concrete goals in a number of areas.

You can support the department directly by contributing to the Linguistics Fund. This gives us the discretion to use your contribution to support any of our endeavors, for undergraduate or graduate teaching, as well as research.

You can also support individual programs in Linguistics by contributing to another of our funds:

John Rickford Undergraduate Development Fund

The John Rickford Undergraduate Development Fund was set up with two purposes in mind:

1. to honor John for his distinguished intellectual achievements and for his unstinting commitment to marginalized communities and the languages that they speak, and
2. to provide new academic opportunities for undergraduate students in the Linguistics and Language Studies majors whose academic performance is distinguished and who have made contributions to the Department’s life and sense of community.

Your support to this fund will help to pay for undergraduate research projects, travel for undergraduates who have been accepted to research conferences, undergraduate linguistics club activities.

Tanya Honig Graduate Development Fund

The Tanya Honig Graduate Development Fund was set up with two purposes in mind:

1. to honor Tanya, who generously and selflessly nurtured many cohorts of MA and PhD students in Linguistics, and
2. to open new research opportunities for graduate students in the Linguistics Department whose academic performance is distinguished and who, like Tanya, have contributed significantly to the department’s life and sense of community.

Other examples of things your support to this fund helps pay for: are travel for research in the field or to research conferences for graduate students, graduate research support supplies, and equipment.ndergraduate linguistics club activities.

Linguistics Research Center Fund

The Linguistics Research Center (LRC) is the research arm of the Department of Linguistics. Its mission is to enhance the environment for linguistic research at UCSC, coordinating the department’s research efforts, disseminating the results of that research, and providing a venue for members of the department to collaborate with other scholars at UCSC and with scholars from other institutions.

The LRC maintains the department’s labs, coordinates the logistics of externally funded research projects, and provides organizational support for the many research events hosted by the department, including colloquia, as well as workshops and conferences. In addition, the LRC maintains the departmental library, which contains a collection of books, journals, and working papers in linguistics.

Your support to this fund may help to pay for conferences and other events, software, journals or books, and equipment for the departmental labs.
