The UCSC Linguistics Labs are part of the Linguistics Research Center. They include a Language, Logic and Cognition lab, a Phonetics/Phonology Lab, an Experimental Syntax Lab, and a Semantics Lab. We view the goal of linguistics as the understanding of the core mental mechanisms that enable language. It necessarily encompasses a variety of methodological approaches, including both the analytical work necessary to formulate hypothesis about linguistic form and function, and the empirical work that tests and validates those models.
